The person was in love with is Tifa not Aerith. Aerith has never been called his lover. she was described as a mother or a symbol of his sins to protect the ones he loves. Tifa has been described as his koibito which is the Japanese word for lover. She is described as the mother of the family they formed together in Edge, as well as being more than a friend, and an important woman to Cloud.
