Dave Jeffery Inkscape, Swift 3D and Adobe Flash showreel version two point zero.

It was time for an update as the network globes in particular were a mortal embarrassment to me and I also hadn't distressed anything on the old version as, back in 2008, I didn't know how. I've thoroughly picked Rory Clark's brains since then!

The Flash was exported out as PNG sequences for processing. The film effect was done using the MSU Old Cinema plug-in in VirtualDub and the MLT Old Film plug-in in Kdenlive. I also used The GIMP in batch mode with some Scheme scripts I wrote to add some "glow".

I found Kdenlive to be excellent but editing to music was hard as what you saw in the application didn't always reflect what you saw in the finished video.

The captions were all distressed using The GIMP.

Please go to the Barclay James Harvest home page and buy a copy of Grim by Maestoso if you like the music. The song is called "Location Location Location".

  • Top notch work as ever Dave, and bonus points for the knowing BJH references.

Where did you find the 1950s Granada variation of the A/R diamond test card? I haven't seen any variants of those designs other than from Malta.

  • @bw1961bw Many thanks for your kind comments. The phrase that plays during the Granada dipole ident is probably my favourite BJH reference in the piece.

As for the diamond cards, a gentleman in Dudley sent some photocopies of the original drawings to the Transdiffusion archive. The diamond cards were commissioned by the ITA and manufactured by Marconi for all of the early contractors.

  • First things first - a much-improved remake of an already excellent production.

However, I've noticed a couple of things...

South-West Transmitter listing - were there two Winter Hills, or did Bolton's most prominent landmark go on tour? I assume you meant Caradon Hill?

Lancashire (plus a bit) listing - I'm kicking myself that I didn't spot the mis-spelling of WindeRmere the first time round.

  • @Woollylinnet LOL! Well spotted! Mind you, as "Winter Hill" doesn't actually exist I don't suppose it matters too much where it goes! This is a classic case of concentrating on one thing so hard you miss everything else. I was obsessing so hard over making the slides look authentic that I really wasn't paying enough attention to what I was actually putting on them. I suppose it proves they're not real though. Just lucky I didn't include the Channel card with Les Toilets on it...

  • Fantastic job and the globes are now smooth as silk too, worth re-jigging. Could do with a tweek to the castellations on test card F though as they have the wrong spacings at the top (the teeny bit you can see under the colour bars ) and the bottom. The black and green squares should be the same size...

All in all though, excellent work sir :o)

  • @Knightyknight72 Many thanks for your comment and yes, the Test Card F is a bit of a 'mare! You've probably also noticed that I didn't make the decimal points in the gratings labels large enough either.
