Toronto blues sensation Shakura SAida enjoyed a triumphant musical return to her hometown last week, one she described as fun & frightening at the same time. Armed with many of the players featured on her new CD Brown Sugar, including co-writer and guitar goddess Donna Grantis, Shakura strutted her sexy stuff on the elevated stage at a jam-packed Revival Bar on College Street. Roots Music Canada was there, and captured this unedited, single-camera version of Sweet Spot from a position on the back balcony.
Shakura appears to be one of those fabled Canadian acts whose star is rising due to recent recognition by non-Canadians: in 2008 she was the runner-up at the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis, and a year later, she struck a record deal in Germany which has since seen her tour Europe nine times.
She is also challenging the myth that commercial success especially for women is exclusively reserved for the young, or for the legends. Roots Music Canada celebrates her talent, accomplishment, sacrifice, perseverance, and inspiration. You go, girl!
Shakura is performing at Koerner Hall (the Royal Conservatory) in Toronto along with 5 other fantastic Jazz artists on JUNE 1, 2011 - the event will raise money for young adults with cancer!
