Go Illini, and Long Live the Chief. The uofi will always remember the Chief as a symbol of the school, and how much he all meant to the Illini fans, families and supporters. No one can ever take the meaning and the word "Illini" away from us, but they can obviously (unfortunately) take the actual figure away from us. We will always be The Fighting Illini forever, and that is what means most. The root word in "Illiniwek" is Illini.. and we... will be that til eternity.
Go Illini.. We Love You

"hmmm, the descendant tribe of the Illini gave UofI their blessing a couple of decades ago"
Don Giles and Ron Froman hardly constitute an entire tribe of the Peoria.
"An individual gave the university the regalia that were used"
Frank Fools Crow was Lakota not Peoria.
"and the Native Americans have demanded to take these things back"
When a person reneges on a promise and does not honor what they mean there's a name for that... what was it... Ah, yeah, white people.

@nickoftimex actually that would be Indian Giver. If you're gonna be racist, please at least use the correct terms. I do hope that you are a better biggot nowadays. Also @jeffab01 the term is only deemed when ONE individual does the giving and taking back of. So one crazy in the tribe giving his opinion to the college and a group of thousands of more Natives unrelated to this particular band of tribe protesting the matter.... would not in fact qualify the use of this term. FYI.

Because the Illinois Confederation were so a tribe and not a collection of other tribes, right? lol The ignorance on Indians is strong in this one. The Peoria as a member of that confederation still exist. Oh right, but non-Indians would love it if Indians no longer existed. Now I'm going to wait for a "You got me wrong/I didn't mean it that way/You Indians should shut up/Get over it/My (insert ethnic group) ancestors were oppressed too/etc." response.

If anyone gets their mascot taken away, it needs to be ECU or Ole Miss. My God, they're promoting piracy and rebellion against the Union. I think that's a little more pressing than a Native American tribe that doesn't even officially exist anymore.

for the people calling foul. first off theyre not indians theyre native americans get it right or dont bitch at all.
-
You little racists should honor your colors and be grateful that you even have a school.

@jeffab01 Remember, that when you bathe in ignorance, you are the only one who loses

NO ONE PUTS THE CHIEF IN THE CORNER!!!!! LONG LIVE CHIEF!

@chcltybonbons obviously you are completely uneducated about the subject. I personally knew one of the students to portrayed Chief Illiniwek and they are sent to a SIX WEEK COLLEGE to learn the AUTHENTIC dance as well as all of the lore and whatnot associated with it. So please, before you open your mouth, grow a brain to control what comes out of it.
hmmm, the descendant tribe of the Illini gave UofI their blessing a couple of decades ago. An individual gave the university the regalia that were used, and the Native Americans have demanded to take these things back... We have a term that we use to describe people that give things and then take them back....lemme think.. I can't remember it...anyone?

Have you all learned nothing from the protests against this racist and disgustingly inaccurte portrayal of the sacred religious practices of Native American people MOCKED by this mascot?
chcltybonbons 3 years ago
I don't understand how it's mocking if the danse was influenced and taught by Native Americans. The clothing was even provided by them. Clearly everyone present is showing a great deal of honor and respect to the Chief. To us, he stands as a symbol of loyalty, dignity, respect, and honor. In addition, the "mascot" aspect is due to the tribes presence in Illinois. Illinois--->ILLINI--->ILLINIWEK
