This an updated tutorial on how to create an animated gif image using the popular image manipulation program GIMP 2.0.

My previous version was done in the outdated GIMP 2.4, and I have been getting a lot of requests lately for an updated version. So I have broken my recent absence in order to make one. And perhaps more videos will be on the way later.

Anyway, GIMP 2.0 is a free program under the GNU public license. It's about the closest you can get to photoshop for free. In fact I'm almost positive that it is the closest you can get (legally).

You can get it here:

  • why my layers are growing up like stack? previous frames do not hide. so..

  • @atzuFUCKEDyou The background of each frame needs to be solid, so they stack on top of each other like a deck of cards. As it stands right now, the background you're seeing is on the bottom layer, and the background of each individual layer is completely transparent.

  • Thanks so much, this helped me a lot. My only problem is that when I'm working on my layers in Gimp they all look clear and nice but when I export my gif file the final animation comes out looking pixelated. Any idea how I can fix this?

  • @BelieveInMyDaydreams I sent you a PM with some ideas.

  • @xxplayer482xx D'X But the stuff I want to make would take FOREVER to draw then animate frame by frame...

  • @MorganDoYourThing pretty much

if you make one and duplicate it you only have to make small edits to it

  • thanks you so much.

  • Do you have to draw EVERY frame?

  • you say that you used gimp 2.0 but the title says 2.6
