That "barstool" tip is OK for people who tend to swing straight-legged, with knees that are locked or nearly so, but I basically agree with you--it's one of those "tips" that's really easy to overdo, very quickly. Those kinds of images make the rounds among amateurs who have no idea when they're overdoing something, or what a good move is supposed to look and feel like, and before you know it they're doing exactly what you're saying here.
...And secondly, the relationship of the right shoulder to the ball on the downswing is similar: the right shoulder is simply turning; it doesn't need to be described as "down, out, and forward," as if these were three separate qualities of movement.
Not surprised it helps some people--Cook is a good teacher, and besides, almost any tip will help _somebody_--but biomechanically what he's saying is both wrong and too complex. If your right shoulder is turning on the backswing, it should not be sliding in a straight line (as against an imaginary wall). ....
such a great tip

This is a solid tip! I have a slight OTT move with my right shoulder.

This is a NIFTY little tip. It makes for a crisper contact. Thank you for posting it, KOC.
