  • hi, i just bought a macbook pro off of ebay, and it seems like the guy upgraded it from 320gb to 500gb seagate hard drive, are seagate drives reliable? whats your experience with them so far?

  • I have not had any problems with seagate. The one I have had problems with in the past was MAXTOR. Hope this helped you out.

  • do you have to reinstall the os? or use time machine?

  • you can use time machine to restore files back and reinstall the OS, or you can use a free program named SUPER DUPER which will allow you to copy the partition to another hard drive.

  • will doing this void my warranty?

  • Almost anything you do on a computer can used as an excuse by your manufacturer as a way to say you voided the warranty. If done right and carefully I don't see why it would. Check with apple first and if you feel unsure then let them do it. This is more for the doit yourselfers.

This is a simple upgrade, just like upgrading your ram. You are not taking the machine apart so the warranty should not be voided. Best of luck.

  • Thank you. Yes that bracket is a pain to put back in.

  • very handy. i always find putting that bracket back on quite tedious tho :P

  • This macbook has a 1.86GHZ Processor, 2GB or Ram, and it had an 160GB Hard drive.

By the way I wanted to mention here that if you upgrade your drive you can use a program named SuperDuper which works flawlessly for this function.
