Military personnel hoping to earn the Air Assault Badge navigate the Air Assault Obstacle Course Aug. 10 as part of "Zero Day" at Fort Pickett. A mobile training team from the Fort Benning-based Warrior Training Center made up of nine National Guard Soldiers from eight different states are teaching the 10-day course that trains personnel on U.S. Army rotary wing aircraft operations including combat air assault operations, rigging and slingload operations as well as rappelling from a helicopter. A total of 114 personnel started the morning hoping to earn the badge but after a two-mile run that had to be completed in under 18 minutes and the nine obstacles in the obstacle course, a total of 85 personnel qualified to continue working towards meeting the requirements for the badge. The obstacle course isn't much different than the one we had at Infantry school in the '70s.
