Speaking for the International Committee for Fair Elections in Taiwan, former US Senator and Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski on 13 Jan, 2012, strongly criticized former AIT Director Douglas Paal. In interviews for Taiwanese media two days before the presidential election on January 14, Paal had cast doubt on opposition candidate Tsai Ing-wen's ability to maintain good cross strait relations, and stated that the USA would prefer to work with incumbent President Ma Ying-jeou.

I am sorry for cutting out the statements of Peng Ming-min, sitting on the right, who is a very respectable figure in Taiwanese politics. However, since he only translated Murkowski's remarks, I had to edit.
