The Other Side - Mexico

Over the last century hundreds of thousands of Mexicans have migrated to the United States in search of a living wage. Particularly in the 1980s, thousands of indigenous people made the 3,000 mile trip from the southern state of Oaxaca, many illegally crossing the border, to find work in Los Angeles. Working for the rich, they became America's new poor. While their families lived off the dollars sent home, rural Mexicans also paid a price - in community and cultural disintegration.

I'm 15 years old. I crossed the border with my older sister when I was 8. I traveled by car, by train, by foot! I suffered a lot and will never forget my journey over here. But life is a risk. It's a better life in the other side. I used to be a poor homeless in Mexico. I left my family and I still miss them. But we still communicate. I'm now a worker at a Swapmeet. I go to a school hoping to get an education. I learned how to speak proper english. And I could see a bright future ahead of me :)

I travelled extensively in Mexico, & found the people, fantastic, friendly, generous, kind, compassionate, - qualities that America is losing.

I would gladly settle in Mexico, spend my last years there, & feel safe.

I felt safer in Ciudad Juarez, than in many parts of the States, ie. parts of NY. New Orleans, Dearborn, Minneapolis.....I guess it was blacks & muslims, for the most part, who made us feel unsafe & threatened.
