Standing out elegantly in the Queen Sirikit Public Park is the Great Ocean dragon statue, established by the Office of Phuket city.

It is a great sea dragon with five talons for the King called Hai Leng Ong.

The Sea dragon called Hai Leng Ong was built in 2006 to join the national celebrations of HM the King's 60th Year since his Accession to the throne. The year also marked HM the King being the world's longest serving monarch.

The history of the great dragon Hai Leng Ong started since Phraya Ratsadanupradit was the governor of Phuket. At the time Chinese teacher described Phuket saying that that from a bird's eye view, the island looks like a dragon emerging from the Indian Ocean.

Geographically it leads to people's belief that the location of Phuket today is 'Hai Leng' or the ocean dragon of the Indian Ocean.

This is one of the 4 Great Dragon elements in Chinese legend which have duty to protect the ocean as commanded by heaven.

The belief has also draw comparison between Phuket island to parts of the ocean dragon.
The Head of the dragon facing south is Promthep Cape.
The dragon's eyes are Karon bay.
The dragon's open mouth is Tung-ka area.
The dragon's stomach, front legs and back legs are on the east coast of the island.
The Heart of the dragon is central part of Phuket City.
The dragon's spine is on the west coast of the island.
The dragon's tail from beginning to the end is at Baan Ta-chatchai.

The Great ocean dragon - Hai Leng has been sitting comfortably in the Queen Sirikit Park since June 9th, 2006 and has become one of the important landmarks of Phuket city.
