On a cold winter day where the temperature was -12 degrees Celcius and the windchill was -20, two Canadian National Railway freight trains meet at a remote location east of Kingston Ontario.

CN train #120, with SD70M-2 8821 and a SD70I 5621, moves past CN train #305, with six locomotives. SD75I 5785, Illinois Central SD70 1007, GP38-2 4730, SD75I 5744, SD40-2 5249, and a Dash9-44CWL 2505. Pulling 105 cars west to Toronto.

On a day where not much freight train action happened, getting two freights meeting each other is a treat. Especially on my last day of vacation from work!

  • Stupid question for you, does the rails get HOT after a long train like runs by? always wondered that!

  • @radionut63 - there never is a stupid question.

Does the rails get hot after a long train rolls by? - No. Even in winter, the rails stay ice cold. The steel wheels just roll along like on glass.

Now, if the train was moving at say 50mph...and suddenly the train went into emergency where some of the wheels lock up, then yes....but it will be the wheels taking the heat. That's how flat spots happen. The wheels gets hot....sliding on the rails. Not rolling.

  • @radionut63 - The sound you hear of some wheels going "thud thud thud", is a flat spot.

  • that's a great!!! CN train vid

  • @Adidasdude74 - thanks. it all happened by chance.

  • Refering to the post about CN Gp40s does that include companies' Gps swallowed up by CN, or is that just Mainline Canada? Because here in Wisconsin I see gps like that all the time, (but i think thats switching, or its to curvy of a route for anything bigger) Hell, ive even seen Longnose gps out here in regular use, even alcos

  • The post about CN GP40's was about the original widecab ones. Built in Canada in 1974-1975.

  • That second train had 6 engines. It must of been a heavy load.

  • I sent you a video response of a day when I was in the same area, near Brighton Ont, filming the CPR on a day where it was -20 before the wind. Very cold, but a beautiful day none the less.

  • what a lashup that second train did.

  • No K5LLA on the SD70M-2? wow

  • It's called "FRICTION" there will be a small variance in tempurature after a train goes by, wether it be winter or summer, might not be noticable

  • In 2010, our snow was most terrible. It cancelled train rides and disrupted the airports and so on :(

  • Imagine emergency services commin' and 2 long freight stoping them? Wow, Your house would burn

  • Great catch. Never saw an sd70m-2 with a K3 horn tho

  • cool video hell it looks like that down here in Texas right now th snow I ment not CN I am in UP Territoty unfortunatlly
