This is a Lafayette Model PA622 Class A push pull all tube PA head. Comes with 4,8 or 16 ohm taps on the output tranny. (1) 6CA4 rectifier tube, (2) 7189 power tubes, (1) 12AX7A pre amp tube and (1) 6AV6 preamp tube, which are all Mullards.

I took this 60's 20 watt PA head and replaced the input and output with a couple of 1/4 inch jacks, plugged in a 1998 stock Les Paul, hooked the output up to a 4x10 Marshall Valvestate cabinet loaded with 35 watt 10 inch speakers. As you can hear this amp has a myriad of crunch tones. When the Aux 1 - 2 control is turned left or right the gain increases substantially. Turn the tone control all the way over to the bass side and it sounds like a Fuzz Face. Listen to the demo and youll get the idea.

This amp is totally stock with no replaced parts. It could probably use some extra filtering because it does have a tendency to get muddy with certain controls turned up all the way. Hey, ZZ Top made a living with that kind of tone. The tube sockets should be cleaned and the sliding power switch gets a little funky sometimes, just like on a Fender Champ. It is what it is.

Again, another really loud amp. So loud in fact that my wife was yelling at me to close the door to my music room and I opened the door and informed it was closed. Not bad right out of the box.

  • Yes, it was the mic input. Usually I can get away using the old tubes. Hey, people pay a lot of money for those NOS tubes. Anyway, the most important thing to check is the filter and the coupling caps. There is usually always one or two that are bad. If you can, fire it up slowly with a variac if not, make sure you have the right fuse in it, keep your fingers crossed on one hand and the trigger finger of the other on the ac switch. Any sign or smell of smoke, pull the trigger!

  • Where I can get a 7189A PP amplifier circuit. My power transformer is 300V/350V, 6.3VX2

  • @tamyk007 Best place would be to hit up your local hamfest. That's where I found most of these.

  • I have one of these laying around for several years now. Staring me in the face right now, and I decided to do a search and found your awesome demo. since I am more of a keyboard guy, i havent really messed around with it much. I got a few questions.

which input did you replace with the 1/4", one of the aux or the mic? Im gonna pop the tubes out and spray it up, clean the pots and all that. Wondering if fresh tubes are in order.

  • That is awesome! Would sound cool to run an EQ or gain boost for even more crunch and tone shaping.

  • @tonehound1 I got some circuits yesterday, just type 7189A in google search.

  • Pretty schweet!

  • Paul you sound great on that rig. bet you have some ol' bell and howell gear. I know I do!

  • Man, the tone that thing has is great, sounds quite vintage, great classic rock tone. Great stuff there, plus your guitar work ain't half bad dude.
