The Youth Development Summit lasted for seven days, 168 hours—but no one who visited, participated and led this Summit will ever forget it! We spent seven rigorous days together, from 7AM to 12AM. During the first three days, we delved into four different learning modules (Communications, Teamwork, Community Service and Project Management). The next three days were spent at the Vocational School for the Orphaned and Handicapped in Saigon (Trung Tam Day Nghe Nguoi Khuyet Tat va Tre Mo Coi, TPHCMC), where the participants planned, led and executed three community service projects (building a garden, fixing a library & creating a lifebook from interviews with the students at the vocational school). While the participants had to accomplish these projects, there were also underlying questions that they had to work through such as: How to get the students at the Vocational School involved in building the garden? How to encourage the students there to use the library more? How to get the students there to share their stories and how best to convey the personal content on paper? On the last day, no one wanted to leave. Not me, not the VietHope volunteers, not any of the participants. We took over 7,000 photos, developed over thousands of memories and learned so many unforgettable lessons about ourselves, our surroundings and our capabilities.
