Opening of WEWS in 1986, looks nearly identical to WPTV at the time.

  • I agree with their male imaging announcer. Can't stand their female imaging announcer, either. Heck, even Sean Caldwell was far better than both of them.

Looking at WEWS's website, which desperately needs an upgrade, I have to wonder what Scripps is thinking.

Still... they and the Gannett-grfx-neutered WKYC are light years better than anything WOIO puts out.

  • I emailed WEWS Website manager about their upgrade status, and she told me they have no plans to do an upgrade as they are very proud of their current website. .......she must be joking! It looks like something from 1999.

  • They will get new graphics at the end of the year, though. Scripps will be centralizing that department at WFTS Tampa (which just unveiled their new open and grfx last month) by October. Which apparently was in the works for over a year, recession or no recession.

  • I'm guessing their web development team isnt located at WEWS either. Will WEWS be getting graphics similar to other Scripps stations, or will all Scripps stations including my WPTV in West Palm get new stuff?

  • Nearly identical to WPTV in both graphics and news sets. Both were and are owned by Scripps... in fact, the WEWS calls are a tribute to company founder E.W. Scripps!

Note, too, that the music package and Ernie Anderson's delivery is exactly identical to WPLG used!

I just wish that WEWS would use a version of the Renderon graphics that WPTV uses. Why not? Those are sweet... not that WEWS' in-house graphics are awful... they just aren't consistent.

  • It wouldnt be bad if they used WPTVs announcer too. WEWS announcer sounds like he is 12. Also WEWS is the only station that has not updated its website to the Scripps Standard. I find that odd since WEWS is Scripps flagship station.

  • @videonut33 Make that BOTH opens-- 'EWS and sister ScrippsHoward station WPTV w'/ the "Looking Out" theme.

  • oh BTW, JCBurns of TVbD did the GFX for the open.

  • You guys ain't kidding when you say this is identical to WPTV.

  • to: Market42Fan: I forgot that Mr. Henry retired from Channel 5.

  • @kingofphilly1985 Ted Henry retired almost a year ago.

  • Great news opening and theme! Ted Henry is still at WEWS-TV. He's been there since 1972.

  • WEWS just upgraded NewsNet5. It now can play videos!

  • From the side Wilma looked like a rooster with her hair fixed that way...LMAO
