Donald Campbell Killed in Water Speed Record Attempt. Campbell was a British speed record breaker who is the only person to have set both world water and land speed records in the same year (1964). On 4th January 1967, Campbell was killed whilst attempting to set another water speed record in his 'Bluebird K7'. He had already set seven water speed records between 1955 and 1964 with speed increases from 216mph to 276.33mph. The accident happened on Coniston Water, Lancashire, England. The Bluebird surpassed 320mph but as she did so she gradually lifted from the water before somersaulting out of control. Campbell was killed instantly.

Donald Campbell was a very brave man and I am amazed at the cowardly and stupid comments made about this awful accident. Just a shame those that have made such comments have never done anything that even comes close to all the achievements that Donald Campbell did, at the controls of state of the art vehicles for the time. He was doing this for his country. A true Englishman and a gentleman!

Amazing run up until the event. In the video its hard to tell, but it looks like he was going down a road of trouble 5-7 seconds before he lifted off. Looking at it he has the sponsons off the water before this and then sets it down then off again. I wonder if he had spotters along the course with radios to give him immediate feedback on his attitude? If he did not he should have. A spotter telling him he was getting to light in the front may have kept him alive. Great attempt.

To all the wankers who left negative comments. Donald was a British hero who deserves respect not ridicule. Shame on all of you. R.I.P. DONALD

The technology of the 1930s-1950s was this kind of engine, and a lot was developed by both this man and his father. Unfortunately, when the media began to lose interest and science turned its attention to space this man lost his livelihood and all meaning for his life.
I wouldn't have said that was a "waste", as such.
