Mercury is the first planet from the sun, closest to the heat and smaller than all but Pluto. In Roman mythology, Mercury was a messenger and god of business and trade. He bears wings on his feet and helmet, and became famous as an icon for Ma Bell back in telephone monopoly days. The planet circles the sun once every 88 days, and reflects the sun's light so brightly that it is easily visible both at twilight and sunrise. In fact, the Greeks thought it was two separate planets, one that they named "Apollo," and the other "Hermes." Similar in appearance to our moon, Mercury has been around some 4.6 billion years. The music is from Gustav Holst's seven-movement orchestral suite, The Planets Op. 32. This particular movement is called "Mercury, the Winged Messenger."

  • Wait a second...IS this even an orchestra? I didn't hear any strings, and the contrabassoon lick at the end sounded more like a contrabass clarinet. This must be a symphonic band arrangement. lol

  • You have a good ear. I didn't miss the strings at all.

  • Excellent!

  • Hey, Plugfive, thanks!
