I studied with James Stamp for four years in the mid 60's. He would have me hold the trumpet mouthpiece with just thumb and index finger to prevent too much pressure. Sometimes he'd put a toothpick inbetween my index and second finger to keep me from clamping down with what he called the "death grip" At the lessons he would always be sitting at the baby grand piano guiding me through the notes. Play along with your right hand on the piano to prevent the pitch from sliding around.

Did doing these exercises help your overall tone and efficiency on the horn. by this i mean "first attacks" and just an over all tone production?
