2011 Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

All this week, Medical Laboratory Professionals are recognized for their behind the scenes contributions to health care.

North Platte Mayor Marc Kaschke issued a proclamation declaring this week Medical Laboratory Professionals Week.

Lab technicians are often found behind microscopes, and play a vital role in helping doctors identify and treat diseases.

As the baby-boomer population ages, there is also a shortage of medical lab professionals across the nation.

North Platte Community College has 15 students enrolled in its MLT program.

Students travel as far away as Lamar and Valentine to get clinical experience.

"All of it is trying to accommodate a much more rapid diagnosis for the patient, and ultimately better health care," said Martin Steinbeck, program director for NPCC's Medical Laboratory Technician program. "And ultimately you want those lab results correct, so we emphasize a lot on quality control, and we teach a lot of that throughout the duration of the program.".
