Of course he isn't any more, Amy Rose was chosen to be the "damsel"-esque character in Sonic CD and Tails was changed to be male and referred to as "Miles" in Sonic 2(Genesis/MegaDrive) I see people make an authoritarian statement about a game they barely know about the development of, and smug people saying "Tails was never a girl" without knowing the history of the character.
