This art project is called "The Great Wall" - a social protest.
The video talks about Asians, as you can probably see. It has 2 parts, first one talks about what Israeli people think and know about Asians. As the video begins, there is darkness and a total mess - that's what a typical Israeli would probably think - all Asians are just the same. The viewers follow me while i'm walking in this path - it starts with things that everybody knows, later they get to know things that they probably don't think about when someone says "China" "Japan" "Thailand"... Later you see people, such as singer Ayumi Hamasaki or spy Kawashima Yoshiko or the Philippines' national hero Jose Rizal... It seems to look like my path in life, because what i like is exploring Asian cultures... And I share this with the viewers. Second part is me watching a Japanese movie, all alone. I made it look as if i'm watching a movie at the cinema - first thing was the commercials, of course, later the movie begins and you can see me eating popcorn and drinking coke - I used a bowl and a glass - which symbolizes home - the place where I feel that I can do what I love and nobody can tell me anything that can insult me. What i try to say here is that I'm watching this ALONE - nobody else wants to watch Asian movies with me or hear me speaking about my hobbies - and that's because Israeli community finds Asian stuff weird, boring, stupid etc. - if you're interested in them, you're an outsider. That's how I feel - I can't show everybody what I like because I'm afraid of what others think. So I FORCE everybody to watch this with me; Since it's my own project - it's my big chance to scream my opinion and how I feel about our community's attitude.
I called this project in its name because "a wall" is a barrior, that doesn't let you see beyond it.
It might be too harsh, generalizing all Israeli people in one group - or talking about stereotypes and racism - because I think that they will never disappear. Everybody's a little racist sometimes - we all are human beings, and nobody's perfect...
Still, I had to make this video in order to convey my feelings that were hidden inside - and explain why I find life in Israel a little bit hard for someone like me.
There's something about this artwork, that I can't seem to get yet, that makes me want to watch it all over again and again.
It's good:O.
