Through the use of special effects we retrace the 15-billion-year journey from the big bang to the present. We also hear the tragic story of the martyrdom of Hypatia, the woman scientist of ancient Alexandria. This is the famous episode on nuclear war in which Dr. Sagan argues that our responsibility for survival is owed not just to ourselves, but also to the cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we spring.

  • He is truly inspiring and I believe the world would be a different, better, place if more could find his message. As a non-native english speaker I find his voice and accent soothing.

  • I thought I liked him back in the 80s, but watching these now makes me miss Mr. Sagan very much. He was very important to our world.

  • Great words, truly.

  • @Etcher

    Hahaha, yes, very well said!

  • Whats the song at the end of the vid?

  • Carl, my brother in soul and my friend, I missed you so much since you left the earth in 1996. Now I know you fly in the cosmos like the birds in the sky, exploring and discovering new worlds, new minds; but, after some time, please come back to the earth, teach again in one university, and make a new Cosmos Series update.

  • Love Beethoven's 7th.

  • When my little 4 month old son can't sleep we sneak into the living room in the middle of the early morning and put on the Cosmos DVD and he is usually lulled off by the music and Carl Sagan's voice. I hope he grows up to enjoy watching the series the way I did when I was a kid. It's a wonderful example of how TV can be a powerful instrument of learning instead of a conduit for moronic shite.

  • The depiction of the raven god at 4:22 is AWESOME!

Would history have been different had the Conquistadors not massacred the Aztec? Maybe. :/

  • "I'd defo say its patronizing in the extreme to act like its wrong to destroy quaint traditional civilizations (full of disease, famine, ignorance, death, etc)"

What a quote. With opinions like that we'll be back in our nuclear bunkers in the next ten to fifteen years. By the way, that's kinda how "quaint traditional civilizations" were "destroyed" - by Disease (brought by Europeans) Famine (inflicted by Europeans) Ignorance (brought by Europeans) and Death (issued out by Europeans)

  • @unassumption You have to remember that this was made during the cold war when people really were scared that we were going to destroy ourselves utterly
