From a 1988 performance in London. The Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet perform their touring/gala edition of the scene "Le jardin animé" from "Le Corsaire" that includes the "Pas de trois des odalisques" & the so-called "Le Corsaire Pas de deux". The wondrous backdrop used by the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet for the scene "Le jardin animé" prior to 1989 is seen here in all its glory.

--Altynai Asylmuratova & Farukh Ruzimatov appear in "Le Corsaire pas de deux"

Legendary Kirov stars of the late Soviet-era are seen performing here at the height of their technical & artistic powers. Ruzimatov & Asylmuratova perform a sensational "Le Corsaire pas de deux", with Ruzimatov's trademark flamboyance perfectly balanced with his technical prowess.

It is worth noting that the Wren Orchestra of London is heard here under the baton of maestro Viktor Fedotov (1933-2001), long-time principal conductor of ballet performances at the Mariinsky Theatre who could turn even the most run-of-the-mill 19th century ballet music into poetry. He approached the old guard of ballet composers such as Minkus or Pugni with the same respect he gave any of the "symphonists" (Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, etc.) The Mariinsky still has not found a ballet conductor of his caliber. The manner in which he conducts this multi-composer pastiche while still serving the needs of dancers is breath-taking.

  • This is one of the most beautiful performance I have ever seen, and until now I

    had no idea it existed!

  • I have to agree with everyone... wonderful, definitely going to my favorites, thank you!

  • Beautiful...simply beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing!

  • Marvelous!

  • For me Ruzimatov is the perfect Ali as I think it's the role that most suited his exotic physical beauty and uniqueness of line. And Altynai for me will never be surpassed as Medora. It's a very great pleasure to see this - thank you! - and I agree also with your remarks about the wonderful musicianship of Fedotov.

  • This is sublime! Thanks for the beautiful video.

  • the music was so beautiful...you could feel the care that the conductor and the musicians put into it. the stage, the dancing...a completely wonderful feast for the eyes and ears!
