A feature documentary about the search for identity and spirituality in the homeland of Reggae and Rasta - Jamaica.
In our deeply troubled times in which the danger of the Islam is discussed, the catholic Church loses its influence on youth and integration becomes an ever more intriguing topic, the film directors Noël Dernesch and Moritz Springer follow the journey of two persons who found their visions of a better world in the faith and rites of an originally black culture: in Rastafari and its corresponding reggae music.
Emerged in the liberation movement against the colonial rule, Rastafari has its origins in political declaration of war and offers at the same time a promise of salvation. Rastafari stands for the utopia of a better world. Is it this utopic moment that attracts western youth yearning for meaningfulness and identity that go beyond neo-liberal consumerism? In quest for an answer, the film accompanies Gentleman and Alborosie, two musicians of international renown, who turned their back on western society and set off to Jamaica to face the ultimate consequences of the messages in their music.
The movie documents their experiences during their quest for a spiritual homeland and their integration in a black culture living in a society divided by political disorder. In Jamaica music makes politics. Music is the key to social change. In reggae music freedom and justice is claimed for everyone. But at the same time reggae is business, agitation and exclusion, often referring to the old testamentary value system and thus hampered by a dogma that is quite the opposite of a liberal worldview.
JOURNEY TO JAH narrates the experiences of the two protagonists during their quest for authenticity, set in the context of the daily struggles of Jamaicans longing for a better society. Through our protagonists we attempt to show reggae as a intriguing construct of music, politics and spirituality. We pose some questions of universal concern: What does utopia change into when lived? What gives an idea the strength to unite people beyond personal and cultural boundaries? Gentleman and Alborosie try to bridge the gap between cultures -- despite all dissents -- trying to find answers through the spirit of their music.
