If their God is looking out for them, why are they even fighting a war? Shouldn't their God be able to smite or disarm their enemies so they don't have to fight?

I have always had a problem with the no Atheists in foxholes thing, Shouldn't it be the other way around with no theists in foxholes? If their god is looking out for them, why do they need a foxhole?
