Behavior, a big part of personality, comes from reward and punishment experiences. Most of that comes from environment or other people, during childhood. Intentional self-change takes work, know-how, and often help, to adjust how the environment influences us.
See experiments with animals, including "learned helplessness," where dogs stopped trying to avoid painful electric shock.
