"Tarzan and the Golden Lion" was based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' ninth Tarzan novel written in 1922. The film was directed by J P McGowan in 1927, and starred James Pierce as Tarzan. Pierce married Burroughs' daughter Joan in 1928 and the two of them played Tarzan and Jane on the Tarzan radio show from 1932 to 1934. The film also starred Edna Murphy as Flora Hawkes, Frederick Peters as Esteban Miranda, and Boris Karloff as Owaza, one of Miranda's accomplices.

This gorgeous Alpha Video print is available from Oldies.com. Be warned that all of the original, very faint, silent movie captions have been redone, and not particularly well. The character of Flora Hawkes, Jane's niece, has become Betty, Tarzan's sister. Tarzan's overseer, Burton Bradney, is introduced as Jack Bradley, Tarzan's "friend". The fact that "Betty" greets him with, "Burton! Burton!' when she is rescued might confuse some viewers of this clip.

  • I remember watching Tarzan on TV when a little boy Johnny Weissmuller will always be Tarzan to me. I've seen the DVD packages but was always wary of them as I had no idea of the quality of the prints. Even on newer TV show compilations like Hercules: Legendary Journeys the video can be of very poor quality.

  • Both Weissmuller DVD compilations released by Warners - The Tarzan Collection Vol 1 (the six MGM films) and The Tarzan Collection Vol 2 (the six RKO films) are very high quality prints. You can't go wrong if you get those.

Vol 1 has a whole disc of extra features with documentaries about the MGM films. These have interviews with Burroughs and Tarzan experts and historians discussing interesting details about the actors, the Tarzan cry (one of my other clips) and many other subjects.

  • I am a huge Tarzan fan. I got an entire set of original print 1st edition books from my grandfather. I have to read them every 5 yrs or so. I jusy can't get into the movies. I think it is just so diff from what I picture in my head. I really wish I could because that is lots of Tarzan adventures I missed.

  • this 1920's version of Tarzan is just as nice as the later versions with other actors.

  • James Pierce was married to Joan Burroughs, Edgar's daughter. James and Joan were Tarzan and Jane on the radio serials of the early thirties.

  • James H. Pierce was a gorgeous Tarzan of Silent Era.

  • Please explain why you have entered these two words here. I suspect you are telling us he is your favourite Tarzan.

  • I agree with, support getting the Weismuller MGM and RKO sets. I would also throw in Tarzan Goes to India. A really well made film, and Mahoney is a fine Tarzan, IMO. Tarzan's Greatest Adventure is good, but the part where Tarzan keeps missing his target with his bow and arrow is pretty out of character to me. I have a hard time watching that part. Crocodile fight is also pretty weak, IMO.
