Building Healthy Communities is a 10-year, $1 billion program of The California Endowment. 14 communities across the state are taking action to make where they live healthier. The goal: to create places where children are healthy, safe and ready to learn.
South Kern, one of the 14 communities, invited its members to sign up for "Live the Challenge!"— a 100-day commitment to healthier and active living starting on February 3, 2011. Families and business organizations are asked to pledge to make one change — a baby step — that'll improve health during the 100 days, and beyond.
Many of their communities of South Kern are unincorporated which means there aren't enough sidewalks and streetlights for jogging or bike riding. Fresh fruits and vegetables for healthy eating aren't always available either. But what South Kern lacks in resources, it makes up in spirit. Its underserved communities of Arvin, Greenfield, Lamont and Weedpatch—especially their young people—have proved over and over that they have the determination to succeed.
