So I got the bright idea to make a plaster replica of my head, read up on a few tutorials, and gathered my materials: Vaseline, bald cap, plaster bandages, dental alginate, and plaster. It looked easy enough online... but they forget to tell you so many crucial things! Ah, well, practice makes perfect.
Some things I learned: Mix your alginate into the water gradually, or it will clump. Even with the slow-set, work FAST! Don't bother trying to get it perfect as you put it on - your first priority is just making contact between the alginate and all the skin you're applying it to. As soon as you have the alginate on the face, apply dry plaster bandages - don't wait, and don't wet them - they will not stick, and your alginate will fall off the plaster and disintegrate once you remove the shell. When pouring the final plaster into the completed mold, make the first coat of plaster very, very thin, and just coat the inside of the mold - you want about half an inch of dried plaster to make a shell. Let that shell dry, and fill it up with slightly thicker plaster (the consistency of pancake batter). Do not make your plaster too thick, or you will be left with massive cavities where the air couldn't bubble to the surface.

I remember trying to make a copy of my ear. I thought the plaster would just pull off.. How wrong I was. I also learned that the ears have thousands of hairs too.. Lets just say it took 5 hours to get off and my ear was badly crushed, streched and bruised.. Never ever put plaster on your ears guys... Never...

dude, this video is hilarious! reminds me of my first attempts a while back. it would've worked great if only you 'd gotten the right consistency of the alginate, you were mixing it WAY too thin. But I really admire your perseverance.

The plaster bandages don't have to "stick" to the aljanate, just form a hard cradle for the rubber mold to rest in so that it keeps it's shape when you fill it with whatever material you plan to make the cast from.Since most aljanate is a one time use mold, it doesn't really matter - you could do it either way.

Lol; I wouldn't call this is fail (let alone one of the epic variety). I think you guys did an excellent job; even though you ran into some trouble. Nice finished cast.

The most important thing to remember is that every time ya fail at something, ya learn...the alginate was too watery..it should be almost paste-like in consistancy..use cold water to slow down the set time..before plaster bandages are applied, use cotton batton in a roll...just lightly touch it all over the alginate, leaving wispy bits of cotton behind...this will give your alginate something to bond with...good luck!!
