Don't miss our crash and drama filled bloopers at the end!

This summer we're turning off the video games and kickin'it old school with Nitro Powered Control Line backyard stunt flying excitement. This thing will make you dizzy flying over 50 MPH around a 25 feet radius circle..

The plane is a classic 60's "Combat Cat" look alike that's been re-designed to run on a Cox 049 and scratch-built to include the latest control line combat design features:

- NACA 0018 Airfoil
- Carbon Fiber reinforced adjustable beam engine mount
- 32" Wingspan / over 240 square inches wing area
- Short tail moment
- Less than 10 ounces flying weight
- Thrust / weight ratio greater than 1 for unlimited vertical fun
- Custom "Exponential" control handle

The Engine is an unknown vintage "Ebay" Cox 049 Black Widow that's been re-furbished and modified as follows:

- "Decked" Gilbreath high compresion head
- Nelson Glow Plug
- Custom milled Dual Ports / Dual Boost SPI cylinder
- Custom milled lightened piston
- Polished crankshaft
- "Decked" crankcase with hex brass drive plate
- Gilbeault mouse racing program Tank gasket / Carb needle mods

Currently running a custom blended PowerMaster 30% Nitro Heli fuel with added castor oil

Using a Cox 6x3 prop to keep the revs / speed down and be more crash resistant

Many Thanks to Bernie at Xenalook for his professional advice and seemingly endless parts supply..

  • Funny, I'd never heard of "control-line flying" until an hour ago. Not that I am into RC planes much either. It's funny, it reminds me of "fighting kites", that had glass-coated strings to cut the opponents string. A bit different than control-line combat, but I wonder if it was an influence? I'm curious though...do you have to keep tension on the line, or is it like a Bendix cable (like for bicycle brakes, etc) that can be tight or loose and still control the plane?

  • @justforever96 Hi, in a 'Combat" situation, you have 2 of those planes flying at the same time (Just doing that is not easy!) and you put a 3 feet long paper streamer attached to the tail. The object of the game is to cut the other guy's streamer.

The Dacron strings stay taut bcause the engine is pointed towards the outside of the circle and centrifugal effect from the rotation helps as well. When doing maneuvers you pull the handle to keep the tension or risk loosing control..

  • ive ben flying a little devil and am curious where i can find the kit your flying.

  • @sandman503 Hi Sandman, It's not a kit... I used the general pattern from an old 60's TopFlite .40 size "Combat Cat" Kit I had, I "shrunk it " to run on a 049 and we went from there.. It's all scratch made from balsa you buy at the Hobby store ..

  • TheKidsPlace, You're right, it turns out this thing has so much thrust, there is no need to run at all: just point it up and give it a little push..

  • Nice flying guys! I think you'd have more energy for the release if you didn't run halfway around the circle first. >;-)

Wish I could fly from my backyard.

  • Love it! I really like control line flying. It is how my dad taught me to fly.

  • The USA team trials is this year in Detroit. We need a jr. entry. looks like to me he would fit the bill. He could make the USA team and fly in the World Championships next year in Europe. We havent had a jr. entry in the several years. He would be a shoe in!

  • Kids got tallent I crashed mine as soon as my friend let it go. UP then straight into the ground like a lawn dart!

  • @TorqueAholic AWESOME! I am a lifetime control line modeler... although for a the past couple of years I have only gotten out a few times a year. Great looking and great flying model! Bob

  • Oh, oh...! Dad's turn. Better get the epoxy ready...

  • what does the engine look like taken apart? i took apart my prehistoric Webra engine and it had a little counterweight and piston+everything and this is probably way smaller
