Extremely rare first televised performance of Joe Dolce's 'Shaddap You Face' on 'SHIRL'S NEIGHBOURHOOD' kids show with host Shirley Strachan. This was before the song had been released and had even secured its first record deal. Graeme "Shirley" Strachan (January 2, 1952 - August 29, 2001) was the lead singer of Australian 1970s rock group Skyhooks. Born in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern, he was an avid surfer, and his nickname "Shirley" was given to him by his surfer friends because of his long, sunbleached and very curly hair, referring to Shirley Temple. Shirl was killed in a helicopter accident.

  • I just loved this song when it first came out and saw Joe Dolce live at the local Westfield Shopping Centre in Airport West here in Victoria. Ahh those were the days indeed. I feel so sorry for today's kids. In so many ways they're missing out. Kids tv is nothing like it used to be.

  • @strongtam It was a huge playground hit when I was a kid :-D

  • The neighbour on the left looks like cameraman Jack Degenkamp (Seen on Tonight Live with Steve Vizard)

  • he must have sold millions!

  • I wonder what JOE DOLCE is doing these days?

  • Fantastic!!! Thanks for posting :)

  • strongtam - I'm Australian, born in 1985. My first memory of this song was in the car with both of my parents and two brothers when I was still in a booster seat so I was about 3. Whenever this song would come on the radio either at home or in the car, our parents would turn it right up and we would all sing along. And yes, we yelled "shaduppa ya face" at every given moment for the next 10 years. Great memories :)

  • I just can't believe you are from Painesville, Ohio - what street did you live on in Painesville Joe?

  • What a riot! So fun. I wonder how many kids were running around Australia yelling "shut uppa you face!" after seeing this. This just endears Australia to me that they would show this to kids. We're too uptight in the states!

  • Grazie! Fantastico!
