@Kov3rage I don't like comparing era's, I think it is truly ridiculous. To say that Nadal is the greatest clay courter of all time is redundant to me, because from 2006 onwards, the competition on clay has been undeniably weak.
Nadal was spent in both on this matches. Hamburg and Madrid.
Slices against Nadal, on clay, is a neutral shot, it's not going to win you matches. If he was able to dictate play as much with the backhand as with the forehand, he'd be leading the clay h2h.

@MaratSafinVideos Nadal is the best clay courter of all time. Federer lost to Nadal because he didn't have the right game plan. He tried to hit topspin backhand on high ball instead of slice which hurt himslef. If he wanted to hit topspin backhand on high ball, he should hit with half swing not full swing which will allow him to sweep the ball down. But Federer showed some good game plan against Nadal on clay in Hamburgh 2007 and Madrid 2009.

@Kov3rage No doubt. But Federer has never had a strong shoulder height backhand. It hasn't mattered against most opponents but that's basically the reason why he couldn't crack Nadal at Roland Garros in 2006 and 2007.

It has a lot to do with age. Because Federer is getting older so he's slower. And backhand needs more precised footwork than forehand. That's why his backhand looks weaker and weaker.

@23viktor23 it's the music of a journey man. Federer is the journey man, roaming the world to find a worthy opponent.
