The movie tells the tale of a real life strike by Mexican-American miners in a New Mexico town. When the bosses win a court order against the workers preventing them from demonstrating gender roles reverse with the wives taking over the picket line and preventing scab workers from being brought in while the husbands stay at home and take care of house and children. "Salt of the Earth" was produced, written and directed by victims of the Hollywood blacklist. Unable to make films in Hollywood they looked for worthy social issues to put on screen independently. "Salt of the Earth" is a great movie that was way ahead of its time in many respects. It doesn't just gloss over or suppress the real issues confronting struggling human beings, as is the case, for example, in many Hollywood productions, which favor the construction of phony, superficial heroes and heroines who somehow always manage to save the day.
I am a film teacher in Houston, Texas. I saw this movie for the first time as an undergrad at The University of Houston. It is my opinion that Salt of the Earth is an awful movie. I know nobody wants to hear that but it is my honest opinion. It is so bad in so many ways...just pathetic.
I don't know about that - it ain't no Matewan - but this clip is amazing!
As a film teacher in Houston you should consider the unique depiction and dramatization of labor struggle. For me this changes how good I think the film is.
And I think this clip is awesome - the acting in the union hall scene is fantastic - it's kind of awkward and has a rough edge to it that makes it so heartfelt. I love how there's a kind of untrained feeling to it.
