A WSPA investigation has revealed that one of the holiday's most popular symbols -- the reindeer -- is being subjected to immense suffering in large-scale round-ups and slaughter in Sweden and Finland.

Recent WSPA video footage shows massive herds of reindeer being rounded up, transported and slaughtered for their meat in Sweden and Finland. Visuals from the investigation detail the reindeers' extreme suffering at every stage of the commercial process.

  • It needs to end NOW!

  • As a rational human being, I can only ask one question: Why!?

  • Video is just propaganda and does not reflect reality and distorts facts. As usual to these kind of things it completely detached from context. Killing the reindeer by neck stabbing is illegal in Finland but apparently not in Sweden. FYI reindeer are not Caribous or endangered in any way as Heather there seems to think. Unless you are vegetarian, reindeer is the most ethical meat you can eat next to game of course.

Unlike cattle or other farmed meat, reindeer live in freedom as semi wild animal

  • Can't watch these types of videos anymore...you can get saturated with the cruelty that is done to animals all over the world! I did sign the petition, though! Carry on with your good work, and God bless you!

  • Sorry Heltren, I do not agree with what you say here - Any pain and injury is UNNECESSARY ! And because they have a good and free life before being herded up for slaughter does not excuse the cruel heavy mishandling these animals. This is sadly not 'news' to me, I have seen it all before but I thank you WSPA for taking on this campaign on behalf of these animals.

  • My heart split on milion parts...because that cruelty...God help..

  • nothing wrong with this, this is a sacred animal to the native sami people in norway, sweden and finland, the ear is not cut of, it is marked so the sami know what reindeer pack is theirs so they wont lose them when they take them over the mountains in the spring.

so please stop over reacting, reindeere are to sami people what the great buffalo is to native americans.

the sami use every part of the reindeer to stay alive, so without that they would have died many years ago.

  • Sure its cruel but this is how its done and whil been done

  • May you not take immediate steps to stop it?Why waste time?

  • it's always interesting when someone says something is done very humane. i would bet that the animals involved would say otherwise, no matter how humane a HUMAN being thinks it is..
