QNX support for Apple iPod Out allows an in-car infotainment system to display content from an iPhone or iPod touch, including music and album art. With iPod Out, users can use an interface they are familiar with, and the infotainment system can support new iPod features as they are introduced.

How does it work? The iPod or iPhone drives the in-vehicle display through an analog video output and accepts input through a straightforward button or rotary knob interface. The analog video channel is protected so that unsafe devices like DVD players cannot be used while driving. The HMI is not only familiar to Apple users, but also includes features to minimize driver distraction.

QNX Software Systems is the first software company to enable this feature, with an automotive customer rolling out an implementation as early as 2011.

This week at SAE Convergence, QNX is demonstrating the capabilities of Apple iPod in a specially modified Corvette. Visit booth 717.
