A senior Greek government official has told the BBC that domestic terrorism and strikes have had a devastating impact on tourism, a key industry which generates 20 percent of the country's income.
Experts on Crete, Greece's largest island, say that earnings from tourism this year are likely to fall by thirty percent, that's three times more than government estimates.
Economists warn that such figures could force the Greek government to introduce new austerity measures to avoid defaulting on its debt.
Our Athens correspondent Malcolm Brabant has been to Crete to assess the state of Greek tourism

  • @flyblu80 Italy is not the second country in Europe (as absolute figures) for spending in defense, Greece yes, it is.But Greece has not a GBP as Italy, so this is incredible, don't you? I expect for Italy exactly what you say, that's why we will have a lot of problems very soon. Fed. F. actually could be good in a lot of country but not in Italy, just because it should be realized by stupid politicians that are not able to do nothing more than try to save Mr. B instead of change something...

Thank you for keep loving our country. Greece needs to get the industry back (they were all forced to leave in turkey, bulgaria, yugoslavia and farmers are lobbyed so they cant produse stuff and we are forced to import stuff while Holland 2,5 times smaller than Greece is exporting....Since you are watching our news you probably know all about it and you know that Greece has been stratigicly brought into this place. Im afraid war is near and we are going to be there defending Greece.

  • @vulcanik82

The money we borrowed went to germans and french because we are pushed by them to use the money we take from them, to buy their weapons. You can see cohn-bendit in my favorite videos saying that to the parliement and everybody nods and saying nothing... They want to demiliterize our army but Eyrope is not helping us since they are we are in NATO. Also our tourism is less and less every year...the whole Greece is on fire..but turkey not..and they are no1 in tourism lately...hmmm

On same way, Italy spent a lot of money for Peacekeeping, I think is because Italy have a hight public debt, and reason for continue to spent much money is only one:

Italy must spent because have to go to show have no problem, and italian bond is secure for buy, if italy can show to the international community have no problem, is good.

On italy can apply the same measures for crisis,

    1) Federalism Fiscal, the proprety of Italian State up for sale.

    2)the pubblic employs ,....

  • @EllinonEnosis Thus, nobody asked why Greece spend a lot of money for army and air force. Nobody asked (because nobody knew that) why every day greece must send their airplanes on Aegean just to "stop" Turkish abuses on Greek air space. So, I'm close to you all, I can just say that - maybe - from this hard moment you can raise again without make some errors done.

I'll continue to love your country also because of your people, I still dream to live there... ;)

  • @EllinonEnosis I know, I always follow your country news. In fact I was one of the few to understand why you were - for example - angry with Germans, they wasted a lot of times for just 9 mld of euros, but they surely got their money when Greece ordered a lot of army furnitures (andwe both know that Germany is the major reference for your army furnitures), more more more than just 9 mld every year! This was incredible...

We are not allowed to get the oil we have from Aegean sea because turkey and america does not want it. Crete is thinking of making intependent country and leave Greece. Our islands and land is been sold to countries as we speak. Greek air force is not allowed to fly above Aegean sea because NATO headquarters is been moved to turkey and turkey is not the "quardian"... it all sound fake or rediculous but it is unfortunatelly true...we will see what will happend after oktomber.
