This video posted by http://www.jss.net features Nashville live and studio engineer Russ Long discussing how to equalize a snare drum during the recording process. Russ uses several outboard equalizers (Gordon mic pre) and compressors (DBX) to assist him in this video demonstration. For more information on studio recording techniques and equalization please visit https://www.jss.net/store/index.php?c=root&product=RL-edu and read the book Russ Longs Guide to Nashville Recording.

  • Thank you, nice EQ!! good bless you

  • sooo, did u visualize what kind of snare sound the song needed b4 you turned all those knobs? hmmm?

  • @soundgod08 if not using compressors works for you then go ahead, but don't bash others that use it. As for me, I'll keep using them lol.

  • Hhhhmmmm ? Sounds like the question "who says what's right and and what's wrong" needs to be evaluated. All kinds of time is so often wasted arguing about what's right and wrong and nobody is making music that feels good and sounds good to the soul.

  • Obviously, very little as they did. Compressors cause threshold distortions, kills high end timbre and causes swelling modulation overlaps. Radio stations squash everything so that they can Broadcast at a higher average output. Engineers use them because they think they are supposed to. I had been using them for years. When I realized the difference, I sold all of my vintage DBX's. It has been 18 years now and I am still compressor free. Learn to level gain with EQ.

  • really? maybe thats why the best selling records of all time use compressors and limiters...but what do i know

  • Why use a compressor or limiter ever? They are the worst tool ever created for music. Everyone that uses them say they only slightly use them. So, why use a band-aid when there is a cure? The right head, tuning, muffling, mike selection, placement and EQ. can fix any problem. If you want to put a mix to the test, see how loud that it can be tolerated. Volume is your magnification. If it sounds annoying at 105db, you should make corrections.
