Several years ago, I read the book 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' before it was popular, or adapted into a Tony Award winning Broadway musical. I have not seen the stage production yet. Nor did I recall any of the details in the book as I began my creative adventure putting together this video, interlacing audio & video from the musical 'Wicked' & 'The Wizard Of Oz'.
It was only after I had completed the work on the video that I researched the musical adaption details. ...
What I found is that, without even realizing it, I had interlaced clips from 'The Wizard Of Oz' that are focal scenes in the musical 'Wicked.' Once again, I felt a sense of awe about the energy that stirs us to create ... seems to take us on a journey ... to a place outside ourselves where we do something that is beyond our understanding. I think all creative people must experience this. Not always ... but sometimes ... as a quiet vision - maybe a dream we don't remember - where there is a seed that grows into art.
Inspiration ... how do we explain it? I think all artists, from every expression, ... understand.
I hope you enjoy what my dream brought to me. I loved the experience.

'Wicked' is a Tony Award-winning Broadway and West End musical, with songs and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. The story is based on the best-selling novel 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by Gregory Maguire,a parallel
novel of L. Frank Baum's classic story 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. 'Wicked' tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with
Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.Their friendship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace. The plot is set mostly before Dorothy's arrival from Kansas, and includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film 'The Wizard of Oz' as a
backstory.

Here are brief descriptive excerpts about the
musical 'Wicked' & the parallel scenes I used from 'The Wizard Of Oz'.

Act I
After the Overture, the citizens of Oz gather to celebrate the death of the Wicked Witch of the West ("No One Mourns the Wicked"). Glinda descends in her bubble to confirm the circumstances of the Witch's melting by Dorothy....

Act II
... Elphaba senses that her sister is in danger. She flies off to help but is too late, arriving just after Dorothy's house has landed on Nessa, killing her. Elphaba becomes frustrated and confronts Glinda for giving Nessa's shoes to Dorothy, and a fight ensues.

  • I'm not into "Wicked", and I don't like this being associated with Baum, Oz or even MGM . . . . . . but okay, this was a Good/Great video.

  • Everyone is entitled to a preference for what they do/don't like ... I won't presume the right to take that away from you or anyone else ... I like your candor. Thank you.

  • I saw the show, read the book and obviously saw the Wizard of Oz! its really amazing!

  • Wonderful combo of Wicked and The Wizard. I didn't see the show, but know a little about it. Lesson to be learned here. Dont' judge a person by the color of his/her skin. Even if it's green.
