In memory of my stepfather(the 2nd anniversary of his death) i set off walking from my house along a route he took in his early 20s on his motorbike. A journey he told me about many times which took him from West Yokshire to Hull, through Belgium and France, finishing in the Picos de Europa mountains of northern Spain and a ferry back from Santander. My walk was my own and followed a route i made up as i went, but took in the major beautiful spots he told me he had visited along the way. I then scattered his ashes at these sites and other wonderful places i happened upon along the way. The journey took near 3months to complete all on foot (except the ferries i had to take) and covered 1564miles. After walking the canal system to Hull i then took the ferry to Zeebrugge where i took my only day trip off the camino to visit Brugge for the day, after which i returned to Zeebrugge and continued walking down the coast. Crossing into France and Dunkirk. I wallked across the top of France (Normandy) to Le Harve and then down and along to Le Mont St Michel. I then walked down the river network to Rennes and then on to Nantes. From Nantes I walked to La Rochelle and then Rochfort and a fantastic transporter bridge. Then on to Royan where i took a short ferry to the Gironde region of France and the wonderful wilderness of beaches, sea and pine forest. I eventually crossed over into Spain following some of the haute Pyrenees route and the GR11 route. Taking in Tolosa, Elgoibar (to name a few), then on to Bilbao and finally the Picos Mountains. At the Picos i found a spot to lay the last of the ashes, and then took a bus back to Santander which was a weird feeling after walking for so long. I only slept inside when i really needed, 90% of the time i wildcamped, bivied or slept in bus shelters and the like. Travelling hard like this makes you appreciate every good thing that happens to you no matter how trivial it would seem in normal life. To Stuart you are missed
