Christa Ludwig sings "Starke Scheite schichtet mir dort" (Brünnhilde`s Immolation Scene) from Götterdämmerung by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Sinfonieorchester des Norddeutschen Rundfunks NDR Hans Knappertsbusch, conductor Hamburg 24.III.1962
- Christa Ludwig - Unerreicht - Danke!
This really is sensationally beautiful, full of warmth and love and grief.
Above all qualities, Ludwig of course excells herself in the lyrical low register passages, where she makes us believe that she is truly bidding painful farewell to her heroic husband and her godly father …
Don't forget the orchestra, too, which is magnificently heavy and strong under Big Kna …
@chris14406 I'm a Nilsson fan too but let's face it, this is the best Immolation Scene ever sung; and I've heard so many. Ludwig's being a mezzo is irrelevant; she sings sensationally. Wagner would have been proud. Nilsson was a great Brunhilde but she didn't have great lower notes/chest voice and the Immolation Scene needs those lower notes. I also like Astrid Varnay & Jessye Norman's Immolation account, check them out.
This is on my Youtube Favorites List! Absolutely fantastic! Christa Ludwig had the right type of voice for the Gotterdammerung Brunhilde; she sings with gravitas, majesty and passion. This role calls for a lot of powerful lower notes, which Ludwig has in spades, she's impressive in the middle range and the high notes she does hit are terrific. THE GREATEST BRUNHILDE I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE
I think this ties, or is better-sung, than with Birgit Nilsson. For me to say this, betrays all that I have believed about Birgit. Too bad Ludwig didn't sing this on stage. She has the dramatic bite in her voice that Bruennhilde needs so badly. I am deeply impressed.
