  • Oh, no problem sir, nothing wrong with healthy conversation about martial arts. Someone once said martial arts/disciplines are like keys and people are the doors. Just as certain keys fit certain doors, certain styles fit certain people. So I agree, it's a matter of personal taste. I'm a diehard karate man, so I have love for all of it's styles. May I ask which style you study? I study Shorin-Ken under Tesshin Hamada, DNBK.

  • dear Deek, I have 2 b more specific in my words; i have 2 agree that in kata competition context shotokan katas are flashy ; the posture and stances and movements are strong and fast. When technically comparing goju and kyukushinkai i do like goju style katas much more due to better technique, stances, stronger hip and body rotation etc. But feel free to keep yr opinion; these are merely matters of taste of the same pie ( karate as martial arts).

  • You think Goju is flashy? I would think Shotokan's advanced kata are flashier with its jumping, ground kicks and big hand movements. Goju seems more balanced compared with other styles(not a Goju stylist, I study a different style of karate).

Interesting thing is the much of the more advanced KK kata are from advanced Goju kata which are softer, while the earlier kata are Shotokan which are harder. And all karate has roots in China, so it's in interesting mix here.

  • Kyukushin katas are not that flashy like e.g. some katas in Goju-ryu. Still very challenging to perform well, the knee down part very challenging. Chinese softness and japanese toughness combined well.
