There are several ways to hold the tipper. This way is supposed to less strain your joints. If you look and listen carefully you can see and hear him use a brushtipper.

True Johnny Cope is indeed a Scots song, the two tunes after are of Irish origin. The two traditional styles are very close yet very different but go well hand in hand musically. I play both on fiddle, flute, and by voice.
