  • I hate purists who says "jazz is meant to be played with an upright, that isn't real jazz". I'm a bassist myself and I live both electric bass and upright, and jazz can be played even with a mandolin, a banjo or a balalaika. You can hear the feel jazz to it no matter how it sounds. It's like the "bass is played with fingers, picks are for losers" argument. Don't become snobs and enjoy that sweet bass solo. (Nobody told Jaco Pastorius he didn't play jazz, true? So there you have it.)

  • @BassGrindcore thanks for the comments. I like the Jaco comment excellent!!

I checked out your videos...great playing!! You are a gifted musician to be able to play that stuff, excellent

  • whta is this song called

  • I can't remember! I believe it's from a Coltrane album or maybe Hank Mobley. I learned it 20 years ago

    Cheers!

  • Thanks for the support everyruddyword for the electric bass, I didn't mean to start a war between electric and acoustic, but I actually would've prefered playing it on upright. Paul Chambers is my hero.

  • interesting, but it should be played on an acoustic bass to sound really good... i don't know for the original, I think a faster tempo would have been better here

  • Thanks for the comment. I agree about the acoustic bass...I don't have one but I just love playing his solos!!!I did slow it down, although the original is a lazy medium tempo blues.

  • You and a million other people dont appreciate the sounds that come out of an upright bass. It is far much harder to reach some notes and upright is a classic. And I still disagree that "'an upright bass' which in my opinion is till a very dull instrument"....HATER

  • Therefore it is perfectly reasonable to suggest that a piece that originally was meant for that totally different sound of wood bass will sound better on the actual instrument.Of course, people should not take this too far and become snobbish, 'cause of course jazz CAN be played with electric bass.

To say things like 'an electric bass is far more pleasing to the ear' and 'upright basses are obsolete' and extending that comment to anything more than pure personal opinion, now THAT is pathetic.

  • Listening to upright players from that period (late 50's early 60's), the upright bassits of that era weren't as technically advanced as they are today, and they only really had comfortable access to the low and middle range--no thumb position stuff. So they had to be more creative in a limited range on the instrument. Electric players arent challenged nearly as much by range as upright players. P.C. was also one of the first to solo cleanly and fluidy with the bow. good luck w thatone elcplyrs

  • Sounds great. Im primarily an upright player and P.C. is one of my favorite bassists of all time. I thinks its great that electric players listen to some of the older upright players because you learn the tradition of the bass and whats been done before. continued...

  • @dowsemeister hey, could you send me the sheets for this? I would appreciate it.

  • @dennisisbigger sorry, I only know the music. Tab didn't exist when i wrote this out.

    Thanks for your interest though.

  • Thanks for your interest. I transcribed this back in the 70's before tabs were invented.

I may not be of much help seeing as I only know how to read music.

    But thanks again.

  • is there anyway I could get tabs for this?
