Born in 1952 in Tokyo, Mayumi Tsubokura inherited an artistic drive from his father. He spent his adolescence studying various Japaneses Martial arts, Judo, Kendo, Iaido and Kyokushinkai Karate. Wishing to challenge the great Hawaiian waves, he takes his first trip to Hawaii in 2971. In 2000, eager to see a movie that measures up to the experience of surfing, he contacts friends Franck Marty and Laird hamilton and goes to Hawaii to film the first footage of a project tahat will later become the Riding Giants documentary.
From the serene quiet before the breaking waves, to an invocation of cold, brutal force of the Atlantic, the misty lagoon and the beauty of the reefs of pacific, Mayumi paints a surfer's dream. A homage to the ocean, appreciated by the Hawaiian lifeguards and surf champions. His paintings aspire to be a universal symbol of mankind's respectful harmony with nature, but also a romantic and haunted viion of surfing engagement.
