"hey elon why is it so bad when white people say it? black people say it..., it just is." i am not white i am not rascist but this explanation does not justify the usage of the word. I believe this word is very inappropriate for anyone to say. I think especially think that when black people use that word they are degrading themselves. I am Mexican and I do not call myself or friends and family beaners because I just can, i think being stereotyped is offensive and degrading.

The word Nigger is a racist word no matter how its used or who uses it. Thinking that it makes a difference if the person is black or white only makes you a racist!

@Adium This is EJW - I personally am not a fan of the word but the idea of it being racist no matter who says it doesn't quite make sense. if a gay man calls his friend "fag" he's not being homophobic. It may be questionable his usage due to the hateful way its been used by others but you couldn't reasonably call that man homophobic. Same with the word Nigger. I don't think it should be used as often as it is but Jay Z saying the word in the context of his work isn't racist.

@bccofilms You're argument sounds like you are saying that you can't be racist against yourself. Much like a kid waving his finger in front of another kids face saying "I'm not touching you". The kid may be truthful, but he is far from being innocent.

@Adium I never claimed u can't be racist towards yourself. Theres  tons of examples of self hate. What I'm saying is that to pretend that young black kids saying "nigga" to each other is racist is to stick your head in the sand because you clearly no longer want to deal with reality. Even Dr. Laura's initial usage wasn't racist. Terribly insensitive & completely unacceptable? Absolutely. It's the rest of her rant that WAS racist. There are levels to EVERYTHING.

While I dislike the word in question and do not use it myself nor enjoy hearing other people using it, I have to say - in the interest of fairness - that there is nothing intrinsically wrong with the word. There can't be; it's a word. Words have power based on the meaning we give them; in theory, any word can be a "bad word" or a perfectly good word. So no, Dr. Laura, just saying that word doesn't make you racist.

It's all the OTHER stupid sh*t you said that makes you racist. Dumbass.

Why is this so topic so hard for white people to get. Black people's use of the word nigger can be equated to gay men calling themselves fags and women calling themselves bitches. Lots of groups take ownership of derogatory words in order to redefine the work on their terms and for themselves. Why is that so hard to understand? Taking power away from a word by redefining it within your own group. Black people are not unique in this way and I dont get why people wont just let it go.

Its all the same idea, taking power from a word by redefining it. But what people need to understand is that word is redefined within that specific group. @gladys4321 I AM black and I don't find it offensive regardless of the ethnicity of the person using it. As far as I'm concerned, a word only has as much power as you give it, and nigger is nothing but a chance arrangement of six letters in the English alphabet to me.
