Health experts say obesity is an epidemic in the United States, and it's growing in many countries around the world. Heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are all linked to obesity. Experts advise better diet and more exercise, and that's prompting a growing number of Americans to go back to basics - WAY back. As VOA's Rosanne Skirble reports, some are adopting eating habits they associate with our prehistoric ancestors.

  • Um, I think THE book most "Paleo-eaters" would cite is "The Paleo Diet" by Loren Cordain! How the hell did they miss that?

  • @melymeld

No problem. The best way to figure things out in this day in age is the same as it was 1000 years ago. The idea is, what would you really eat and have access to if you were stranded in the wild? Animal has to supply the most amount of our calories and anybody who tells you otherwise is just delusional. Tell them to live out in the wild for a week and see how much fruit and vegetables they can pluck instead of hunting wild game. Cheers, and good luck.

  • How am I suppose to eat meat that isn't processed?

  • @superluminalthought Your body doesn't have to store anything. It could just dump those calories in the large intestine and be done with it. The body stores fat to prevent death during periods of starvation. It will attempt to maintain about 10% body fat, and discard any calories that it does not need.

To simply glom onto every calorie consumed and hold onto them would be suicide.

People overeat and become sedentary because their energy needs have increased, not the other way around.

  • @TheSmackerlacker, There is somthing wrong, Obesity is a sign you're fat gluttonous bastard who consumes more calories than your body burns off, which is why it has to be stored as FAT instead of burnt for energy. NOTHING IS WRONG.

  • @superluminalthought The idea that obesity is caused by overeating and lack of exercise is extremely common, but also extremely fucking stupid. Do you really think that a combination of very complex systems, all working in tandem to maintain itself and keep you alive, could be so affected by fucking math?

Anyone who's ever taken a shit should know that your body doesn't just hold onto whatever you shove into your fat face. It keeps what it needs and discards the rest, UNLESS SOMETHING IS WRONG.

  • @TheSmackerlacker, Obesity is caused by 1 thing, overeating and no exercise. Red meat when cooked is carcinogenic and I didn't say red meat causes diabetes you clown, I just said the raw vegan diet can reverse it which proves it is the best diet for humans. Now you shut the fuck up.

  • @superluminalthought Red meat is known to cause nothing but a well satisfied diner. Hormonal imbalance is what causes obesity, carcinogens are what cause cancer, and diabetes is caused by failure of the pancreas.

Get your facts straight, or shut up.

  • I'm no anthropologist, but I'm pretty sure that our ancestors ate anything and everything they could get their blistered, unwashed hands on, and shoved it ravenously into their faces right there on the spot.

So, yeah. That's not really what the paleo diet is all about, is it? Incidentally, what's all this nonsense about lean meats? Shouldn't they be telling us to eat more heart and kidney? Doesn't the healthiest, most nutritious meat come from organs?

Pass the small intestine please. Mmm, paleo.

  • I was vegetarian for over a decade and vegan for a couple of years after that. I did lose weight but didn't feel healthy. I can truly say I do now on this Paleo diet. Its not for everybody. No diet is a one size fits all. Finds what your body needs and responds best too, exercise and live...

  • im not taking advice from a fat woman.

  • Fruits were not available all year round!!!!!!!!!! Only by seasons!
