The Great Escape Pt 2 Charity Run

I just missed the first wave of bikes as they rode passed my house on their way to Poland. Details below.

A team of riders and two support vehicles will retrace the last flight of Squadron Leader Roger Bushell from Kent through to Stalag Luft III in Poland, the infamous prison of war camp where the Great Escape took place. The team are being supported by Triumph Motorcycles, who will supply seven Triumph motorcyles for the Escape. One will be very special! It will be a complete replica of the machine used in the film and we will be auctioning it off after this event, so go to their website http://www.greatescape2.net.

They started their journey from Biggin Hill airport on Sunday 4th June 2011 together with many, many followers.

Roger Bushell later was to form the organisation that enabled 76 prisoners to escape from Stammlager Luft III in Zagan (Sagan in March 1944) on a freezing cold night on the 24th. He was one of very many brave allied officers who suffered the 'genickschuss' whilst attempting to escape. Most of the criminal SS were hanged for thier crimes after the war. I think that Sqn Ldr. Bushell would be very happy to know that he was remmembered by such a noble bunch of motorcyclists!!?!

Roger Bushell was shot down in northern France on May 23rd 1940 He was a prisoner at Dulag Luft and later escaped to Prague where my grandfather helped him with papers and clothes to prevent him from recapture. Sadly this was the time when Rienhard Heydrich was disposed of by the S.O.E and this led to Roger's recapture. He was a lot taller than people think standing at six feet. He had a very deep voice too. A natural leader who was shot by the Geheime Staatspolizei twice in the back of the neck
