Over 1000 local government council workers in Bristol marched and held a rally. Speakers attacked the paltry 2.45% pay increase. With inflation running at 4.3%, petrol up 22%, bread up 9% and fuel bills 15%, the wage offer is in effect a pay cut and an insult.
Over half of the rally received Campaign for a New Workers' Party (CNWP) material. This raised the question, 'why are we giving money through our union donations to New Labour?'
Under the leadership of Neil Kinnock, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, New Labour has become a party of big business, devoted to ultra-free market policies, including the wholesale privatisation of public services.
It is time for unions like Unison to break the link with Labour and begin to take on the task of building a new mass party of the working class.

THE LABOUR GOVERNENT IS IN TROUBLE. As a nation we are overcommitted. There is a deficite in government budgets and as a result they are generating more currency, devaluing the pound to cover costs and cutting back on spending in the wrong areas, public sector wages being one of those areas.
Economic crisis is afoot and the government needs us.
