  • There were variations of this song throughout Appalachia as well as England.

Your intonation and announciation are both good. Virtually none of the other YouTube performers did either well. They also over-sing the piece, they love to belt it out. You did this slightly in a couple of places, try not to. The Turtle Dove is a lament. A lament by definition is a song, poem, or piece of music expressing grief, regret, or mourning. Don't show how strong your pipes are..just let the melody mourn.

  • Can you see the similarity in Vaughan Williams song and this tune from the early seventeen hundreds? O can't you see yon little turtle dove Sitting under the mulberry tree? See how she doth mourn for her true love And I shall mourn for thee, my dear, And I shall mourn for thee. O fare thee well, my little turtle dove, And fare thee well for a-while: But though I go I'll surely come agaion, If I go ten thousand mile, my dear, If I go ten thousand mile.
  • Not perfect..but the best I've heard on YouTube. I first performed this song 47 years ago in 1965....solo'd with All-State choir in 1968...It was a part of my repetoire for my Senior Recital at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State) in 1972.

In 1974 I won First Place in the Folk Singing category at the Illinois State Traditional Music Competition with this song.....ironically it really wasn't a traditional folk song...in 1975 this song was only 51 years old!
