Thanks to the growing Linux developer community along with the many brilliant programmers contributing to unleashing the power of the Palm Pre, you can now access the Internet by tethering your laptops, desktops, WiFi device to the Palm Pre as a WiFi Router!

Once you've connected to your Palm Pre with root privileges, you now have access to more than just a smartphone, but a potentially powerful handheld linux workstation/server. A wealth of resources for the Palm Pre are now growing and expanding across the Internet.

I was able to take any WiFi-capable device that had a browser (e.g. iPod Touch) at Best Buys and get it to access the Internet through the Palm Pre. You could also get 2 laptops and a wireless printer to all share the same wireless network or internet connection. The Palm Pre can distribute unique IP addresses for each device requesting WiFi connectivity (DHCP).

Despite being Palm's latest and 1st generation device, it's easy to see now why so many people have already bought or are anxious to get the Palm Pre. The Palm Pre is truly awesome, it's so useful. No other smartphone except the Palm Pre can function as a Wireless Router!

The Palm Pixi doesn't have WiFi, but the Palm Pixi Plus, Palm Pre, and Palm Pre Plus do. If you're on Verizon and have the Palm Pre Plus or Palm Pixi Plus, it's completely free. Otherwise, this app will be a one-time cost of just $14 for the paid version. Preware is not required for installing this app.

A tethering app may already be an the App Catalog for Verizon Palm Pre models as a hot spot app. However, MyTether is a homebrew app that's not available in the App Catalog that will benefit Sprint and ATT Palm Pre models. Try mytether [dot] net for details.

Yes...the Pre was already in the works during the mid 1980's. This kind of technology could have already been available to the public long time ago! :)

It's still working alright. I use my Palm Pre as a WiFi Router just about every day @ work. webOS appears to be going on strong with version 2.0 right around the corner. It looks like it will come with more capabilities/apps e.g. voice recorder, adobe flash, screen keyboard, etc..

hi , when you connect your laptop to the wireless router on the palm pre, i mean where does the wifi connection comes from the first place ? n if you are connected wirelessly to the palm pre router on your pc , is that using any of data or does it charge you anything for using that connection on your laptop please ? i am getting a pre this week so excited :) .

uhm no sorry. the reason is, you need the driver to use the tethering which cannot happen unless you are a hacker genius who can get into ur xbox. if you find out how, let me know.

Works fine for me...I'm currently on the 1.5.3 webOS version while using 2.0.4 Tether app version.

Perhaps not with the Pixi, but it should work fine for the Pixi Plus which includes WiFi. The 1st Pixi model doesn't include WiFi. However, you can still use the Pixi to function as a USB Router.

Of course. xbox live just needs internet access...and the Pre set up as a WiFi/USB router is a handy alternative to get you internet access.
